The Beauty Report 1/13: My hot new affair with Hada Labo, plus CATS

Hi y’all! I have been away from kbeauty longer than I’d like for a few reasons: Holiday vacation is over, I’m working on a novel (my first!), and I have a job. Pesky thing. I kid, actually — I have a job I actually enjoy, which I’m so grateful to be able to say. But it does get in the way of the intensive research I’d like to be doing in the Asian beauty world!

Lately I’ve mostly been focusing on my routine and adding lots of massage per my Chizu Saeki revelations after reading her terrific book, but I had been considering a new toner since my Curology doctor pointed out that the alcohol content in my precious Goodal Moisture Barrier Liquid (review here) *could* be aiding my hormonal acne.

Once I got over my grief and fury, I thought – Well, why not try something famed that I’ve been wondering about? And one of those things was the famed Hada Labo Goku-jyun line. HL is old news to most Asian beauty fans, but I never got around to it till now, so I figured perhaps some of the rest of you hadn’t either. And OMG. OMGGGGGGG.

Here are two pics I took the day after I used it for the first time with the lotion mask method that Saeki talks about in the book. The left is zero makeup, and the right is BB cream, brow pencil, and mascara. I know both are typical selfie fodder but you guys LOOK AT MY FREAKING SKIN. I turn 39 in four months. I’m not bragging — I’m literally overjoyed. That delightful little bottle contains ABSOLUTE MAGIC. I have never used hyaluronic acid before this, so now I see the appeal.

I’m not going to review this because everyone else has already done that, and like all beauty products, it does not do the same thing for everyone who uses it. For my dry aging skin, it was like discovering that the fountain of youth is actually bottled and sold for $15 a pop.

The other goodie I got this week that delighted me to no end was the Holika Holika Dodo Cat Cushion BB, which was 100% bought on a whim because it was only $19, and I’m also a raving cat lady that can’t stop buying things with cute cats on them. Zero shame.

Every step of opening this thing elicited a new squeak of delight from me. The box (which I refuse to throw away), the little flap with the paw prints on it, the actual cushion case, and the applicator puff. But when I opened the cover to get to the actual cushion I nearly lost it (I had forgotten the inside since I ordered this weeks ago and it came from Korea).

GODDDDDD LOOK AT THE LITTLE PAW!!!!!11!! I’m dead.

That’s all I’ve got this week — Just staying diligent in my winter skincare routine (read it here), doing lots of masks (finally fell in love with the delicate silk ones from My Scheming, should’ve done that sooner), and enjoying the tingles of my new love affair with hyaluronic acid. What have you been checking out?

Be good to your skin,

C.

That Hada Labo product was a serious game changer for me! It really helped with product absorption & helped make the most out of sheet masking.

Thats awesome! Did you do the mask with the cotton pads? I used a Tony Moly plain cotton sheet mask but it fell apart easily. I want to find something mroe durable to hold the lotion!

Oo that’s really clever! I do the hada labo followed by a hydrating sheet mask, great for my dry skin at least!

Wait wait – is this the Hada Labo essence you had me try? Because I’m seriously in the market for a new essence, since I was underwhelmed by the FTE.
